Mary Meeker – “Queen of the internet” has delivered her much anticipated annual internet trends report, which highlights the most essential statistics and technology trends on the internet.
The Bond Capital founder and former Kleiner Perkins general partner made her presentation on Tuesday at Vox/Recode’s Code Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The highly anticipated 2019 Internet Trends Report by Mary Meeker is now available. Stunning highlights include Gen Z’s most preferred learning tool, the increasing number of US adults working hard to limit personal smartphone use, internet users denied access to some contents.
Mary Meeker started producing the report since 1995 when she was an analyst at Morgan Stanley.
Below are some of the striking highlights from Meeker’s 2019 Internet Trends Report:
- Internet users have grown to 3.8 billion – over half of the world’s population, with China and India accounting for the largest quota of the users, followed by the US, Indonesia, and Brazil.
- 55% of internet users live in a country where social, religious, or political content is blocked or censored.
- Offensive name-calling online prevailed among 42% of US teens while 16% have faced physical threats.
- 87% of global web traffic in the first quarter was encrypted, up from 53% recorded in 2016. Facebook (43%) continued to lead the biggest sources of news, followed by YouTube (21%), and Twitter (12%).
- Reliance Jio, a privately owned mobile carrier in India, has 307 million customers and recorded annual data usage of nearly 17 exabytes (EB) last year. For reference, the monthly global internet traffic in 2010 exceeded 21 EB. It is now at 122 EB.
- Out of 10 of the world’s most valuable companies by market capitalization, seven are tech companies as of last week. Similarly, in China, seven out of the top 30 valuable companies are tech companies.
- The amount of time people spend on TV (34%) is almost equal to that spent on mobile devices (33%).
- Last year, the number of gamers globally grew by 6% to 2.4 billion people. The growth was sponsored by social networks of choice for avid gamers by titles like Fortnite.
- More US adults (63%) are making efforts to cut down personal smartphone use. The figure showed 47% in 2017.
- Amazon Echo has 47 million install base worldwide since launching in 2015. Wearable tech users increased by 100% to 52 million since 2015
- The effectiveness of two-factor authentication is grossly limited. Only 53% of websites support the ID verification service.
- Educational “how-to” videos on YouTube are the most preferred learning tool among Gen Z users. Internet users spend 4.5 billion hours yearly watching them.
