More Pokémon content? Sign us up for the Pokémon Champions multiplayer game that was just announced. The culture around Pokémon games has always been one of duking it out with others, whether through card trading or online play. Now a new Pokémon battle game is entering the area, presenting us with an opportunity to finally experience a Pokémon Stadium successor.
The Pokémon Champions battle simulator was revealed during the Pokémon Presents stream on Pokémon Day 2025. Despite the overwhelming number of times we said Pokémon in the last sentence, we’re far from done with our obsession with the game series and what it will mean for both smartphone and console gaming.

There’s a New Pokémon Champions Multiplayer Game Coming—No Release Date Yet
Whether you talk about the craze we experienced around Pokémon Go or the success of the recently released Pokémon TCG Pocket, there has always been something to look forward to and enjoy with the Pokémon franchise. The new Pokémon battle game won’t be any different regardless of the quality of the game.
Unfortunately, The Pokémon Company Inc.—jointly run by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc.—often relies on the excitement around the franchise to sell the game rather than make any significant changes and give users what they want. This is partially the reason why Palworld has been such a success, despite the many attempts to suppress the game.
Not gonna lie… Palworld absolutely destroyed Pokémon for me, Legends ZA lowkey looks like one of those mobile ads.
Excited for Pokémon Champions though 💯 pic.twitter.com/82chjeN8NW

Still, a new Pokémon PVP game that acts as the very Pokémon Stadium successor we’ve all been waiting for is something to be excited about. An earlier Game Freaks leak has indicated that a new multiplayer game was coming, but it’s great to see the game confirmed now. Not too much has been revealed about the Pokémon Champions multiplayer game other than the fact that it is under production, but we can tell you everything we know so far.
Who is Developing the Pokémon Champions Multiplayer Game?
Keeping track of everyone involved in the creation of a Pokémon game is tough work as many different teams chip into the development. So who is going to be behind the new Pokémon battle game?
The game is being developed through a collaboration between Game Freak and Pokémon Works as of now. Pokémon Works is a subsidiary of The Pokémon Company and a joint venture with ILCA, focusing on “not only games but also services,” which includes the Pokémon Hub.

The Pokémon Stadium-Style Game Will Support Cross-Platform Play
Pokémon Champions will be available to play on the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. The Pokémon Company refused to make any mention of its playability on the Nintendo Switch 2, but we expect the game will be customized to suit the upcoming console.
The Pokémon games have seen great success by expanding beyond the Nintendo hardware system, and it does not appear that the company is going to slow down in this regard, even if other Nintendo franchises remain console-exclusive. We, for one, are very excited to experience the new Pokémon battle game on mobile, as it ensures a wider range of gamers gain access to it.
How Will the Pokémon Champions Multiplayer Game Work?
The Pokémon Champions battle simulator will entirely focus its gameplay on player-versus-player battles with cross-platform game support. All of the typical Pokémon and their personal fight styles will make up the game’s appeal, as you engage in 2v2 online multiplayer battles to take your opponents and their little and large pocket monsters down.
We don’t expect any of the core mechanics and moves from the previous games to change in any big way. The Pokémon Home connection is going to be a defining element of the experience, as it will allow players to bring different Pokémons from different games and generations to bring their maxed-out buddies to the area with them. All Pokémon will not be available or supported at launch, but you can expect more and more of them to join the space with updates.
If you’ve ever wanted to test your mettle against the global area with your favorite Pokémon, the tournaments expected to dominate this game will likely be the best place to do it. We don’t predict there will be too many other aspects of Pokémon gameplay such as catching and collecting them in this one, but we’ll have to wait to see how it goes.

Will Pokémon Champions Be Better than Pokémon Battle Revolution?
We sure hope so. Pokémon Battle Revolution was an early attempt at reviving the battle format of Pokémon games, but it was a lackluster experience. The game’s matchmaking system wasn’t ideal, and while the design and visual appeal were great, some animation lags and other issues took away from the experience.
If Pokemon Champions is like Battle Revolution that’s already huge
If it has similar usage to showdown oh my goodness- pic.twitter.com/sszYDl5JLd

The game did not fully commit to the thrills of a battle area game or showcase leaderboards and stats that kept wanting players to come back. With the Pokémon Champions multiplayer game, we’re expecting things to be very different, with the competitive element defining the game. While Pokémon Battle Revolution tried to be a Pokémon Stadium successor, it didn’t fully satisfy the craving that players had for the multiplayer, arena-centric experience.
When is the New Pokémon PVP Game Releasing?
For now, there are no updates on when we will see the new Pokémon Champions multiplayer game release. The next Pokémon game we see in 2025 will be Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which is going to be a marvel in its own right. We expect Z-A to be the primary launch for 2025, so it is unlikely that the Pokémon Champions battle simulator will be released early this year.
Pokémon Champions is “now in development,” so a late 2025 release could be possible, but we aren’t going to get our hopes up just yet.

Image: How do we feel about the cute outfits? We’re praying that the game developers stick to this style.
Will Pokémon Champions be Free?
Yes, we expect it to be. Looking at the other Pokémon games released for mobile, we expect that Pokémon Champions will be free to play, along with some in-app purchases to enhance the user experience. This detail may change as we get closer to a release date and learn more, but we do not think that’s very likely.
I’m excited to see what champions brings for the competitive video game Pokémon scene. I genuinely hope it’s just a battle simulator rather than a paid app, but we’ll see.

Are You Excited for the Pokémon Stadium-style Game?
We are pumped to see what the developers do with this game and how the Pokémon Home integration feeds into the battle system of the game. With each new iteration of Pokémon, we have always found something to love and we expect that the tournament-style play and the inclusion of multiple generations will serve us well with Pokémon Champions.
The online response to the game has been much the same, with fans excited to see the return of some of their favorite Pokémon to the arena.

Pokémon Showdown did what the Pokémon Company failed to do all these years, giving gamers a chance to immerse themselves in a battle simulator, but Pokémon Champions appears to be working on regaining ground. Keep your eyes on this space to learn more about what we find out.
