Is there ever a wrong time for a comeback? If the game is broken then yes, maybe there is, but that isn’t slowing down the uptick in the Star Wars Battlefront 2 player count. Eight years after its initial release, this lost game has seen a rise in the number of players flocking to its base. Initially, there was some uncertainty around why this game was coming up in conversation again, but many have linked Battlefront 2’s resurgence to the final episode of Andor.
Additionally, the Fortnite x Star Wars crossover also could have something to do with it, as the live service battle royal game recently flaunted a very impressive collaboration with the sci-fi series. With its full lobbies and its offer of nostalgia with its single-player campaign, Star Wars Battlefront 2’s comeback is one that we’re in full support of. However, we do have to acknowledge the complaints that say the game is “unplayable” following the unwelcome arrival of hackers who have nothing better to do with their time other than harass players in-game.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Player Count On the Rise—EA Has a Chance to Do Something Wonderful
First-person shooter Star Wars Battlefront 2 was developed by DICE and published by EA all the way back in 2017 after the original title in the series came out in 2015. The game was well-loved for its content but also heavily criticized for being so obviously designed for whales who could afford to sink hundreds of dollars in the loot boxes that gave them many in-game advantages.
Over the years, EA and DICE attempted to fix the game and did succeed to a degree, giving many a reason to keep going back to the title every once in a while for their Star Wars fix. Unfortunately, with time, the player count on Battlefront 2 continued to dwindle, making it harder to enjoy its multiplayer capabilities. Eventually, the game faded out from mainstream conversation, but it never entirely disappeared from the limelight.
I forget how fun Star Wars Battlefront 2 is!
First time playing on my new pc and it runs sooo much better. The game still looks amazing! pic.twitter.com/yEsGWnSWBH

Battlefront 2 Steam Player Count On the Rise
In May 2025, Battlefront 2 witnessed a resurgence, with player numbers shooting up significantly. The game almost crossed the 8,000-player mark on May 18 and has kept up a steady number of players above the 6,000 mark this month. This is lower than the all-time peak of over 10,000 players, but it is still impressive nonetheless.
This is amazing @starwars @EA when will yall realize we want a #battlefront3 !!!!!! pic.twitter.com/bRZ1FIr1Tp

The sudden reappearance of Battlefront 2 was not only witnessed among PC players but console gamers as well. Star Wars Battlefront 2 was the twenty-second most played game on Xbox, pulling ahead of Destiny 2 in the process. We wouldn’t be surprised to hear about similar results on the PlayStation although we don’t have any numbers to back up the theory.
Why Is Battlefront 2 Gaining Popularity Again?
As hard as it is to give Fortnite credit for anything substantial, the game does have a way of pulling attention to the collaboration of the hour and all the related content as a result. The Fortnite x Star Wars crossover was a huge success, sparking conversation around the Star Wars franchise and some of its iconic characters, including AI Darth Vader. The early screening of the new Star Wars TV show on Fortnite was a move we couldn’t have predicted, but one that we have come to appreciate.
The spike in Star Wars Battlefront 2’s player count aligns with the start of Fortnite’s Galactic Battle season, which makes it hard to deny the former game’s role in the rise of the latter. Andor Season 2’s final episode was also released recently on May 13, which could be linked to the desire for more Star Wars content among fans. These factors, tied in with Star Wars Day on May 4, could be credited for the attention being showered on Battlefront 2.
Andor was so damn good it brought Battlefront 2 back to life! Nature is healing pic.twitter.com/6k3kPlczrD

The last major content update for Battlefront 2 came over five years ago with the “Battle on Scarif” and there has since been no real attention from the developers or publishers other than a recent dev patch. It could be a great time for both to capitalize on the game’s popularity and show it the love it deserves, but we don’t expect to see EA makin the right moves this time either.
A Battlefront 3 Petition Is Making the Rounds as We Speak
Is there going to be a Battlefront 3 game? There’s no news on a possible addition to the series from EA. With all the attention on Battlefront 2 and its rising player count, there is obvious interest in another game in the series, with fans even starting a petition to urge DICE and EA to work on a successor.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 was one of the best games I’ve ever played, and with more players playing the game now, I believe that it’s time for this to happen.🔥

Do we think the Battlefront 3 petition will be successful? For now, it looks unlikely. With EA laying off a large number of its employees and its releases like Dragon Age: The Veilguard and FC 25 failing to meet revenue expectations, the company has its sights set on other goals. Currently, the conversation around Mass Effect and Battlefield 6 has taken center stage and it doesn’t look like there’s room to focus on anything else.
This is not the Battlefront 3 news you were looking for, but it is what we have to offer. You could sign the petition for a third game and make some noise around Star Wars Battlefront 2 to show EA that this series is worth exploring again, but keep your expectations low and eyes on the games we have right now.
