We’ve been told that 2025 is the year of thin phones, but we’ve yet to see one make a successful release. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge launch has been postponed, throwing up another delay for expectant fans who were curious about its place in the Samsung product hierarchy. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge launch was initially expected to take place in mid-April, but now reports indicate that there could be a month-long delay, with a release in May.

The Galaxy S25 Edge is still coming in 2025, but it may be a late debut. Why is the Galaxy S25 Edge delayed? No conclusive reports are available. Some say there are technical issues that require other testing, while others hypothesize that it could be due to the loss of Jong-Hee Han, head of the DX division, who passed away recently. Here’s what we know about the Samsung S25 Edge launch.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge Postponed: What, Why, When?

Teased at the January Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy S25 Edge was coming this year. Tagged to be sleek and powerful, the company had set the device to be one of the thinnest smartphones ever to make a debut at around 5.84mm thickness. While Samsung said the smartphone was coming “later this year,” tipsters in the know suggested an April 16 reveal date for the smartphone, with a full release in May.

Not all the specs of the Galaxy S25 Edge are known so far. Some consider it to be a low-spec replacement for the Galaxy S25 FE, while others believe it will be one of the more premium smartphones the company offers this year. It’s the same sort of uncertainty surrounding the iPhone 17 Air, where it’s hard to predict which direction the company is set to go based on the early rumors.

Right now, finding the middle ground between the Galaxy S25 Plus and Galaxy S25 Ultra models’ pricing seems to be the best strategy.

Initial Samsung S25 Edge Launch Expectation: The Galaxy S25 Edge was initially rumored to launch in mid-April 2025, possibly around April 15 or 16, but this has been delayed.

Current Samsung S25 Edge Launch Expectations: Reports indicate the official launch will now take place around May 13, 2025—a one-month delay from the original proposed timeline.

Why Has the Galaxy S25 Edge Been Postponed?

Samsung never confirmed a date for the Samsung S25 Edge launch, so it isn’t about to confirm that the smartphone is being delayed either. The Galaxy S25 release update comes from rumors, some of which suggest that the smartphone has run into some product flaws and technical issues that need resolving. There are “technical reasons” that have made “further testing necessary,” so until those are addressed, we will not see a confirmed release date.

Other rumors indicate that there are a lot of internal reasons for the delay. The Galaxy S25 Edge is coming later in 2025 because of the passing of Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee, who led Samsung’s Device eXperience division, last month. This would make a rushed early release feel inappropriate for many reasons, making a delayed release more appropriate while the organization reasons matters out internally.

There has been considerable political upheaval in Korea, Samsung’s homebase, so that could also be another reason for a delayed release of the Samsung Galaxy S25, so the news isn’t overshadowed by other more pressing ongoing issues. It is also possible that Samsung wants to better position itself against Apple’s iPhone 17 Air release and needs the additional time to plan ahead, but we can’t be certain that’s the case.

Galaxy S25 Edge News: What We Know So Far

The Galaxy S25 Edge is expected to be only 5.8mm thick, which is its most stand-out feature. The smartphone could have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and feature a titanium frame with a frosted glass back panel to emphasize its sleek look. With a 6.7-inch AMOLED display featuring a 120Hz refresh rate and QHD+ resolution, thin bezels, and blue, black, and silver colorways, the rest of the specs appear to be quite standard.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge’s rumors suggest the smartphone will adopt a dual-camera setup with a 200MP ISOCELL HP2 primary sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. The lack of a third lens would allow Samsung to keep costs down while also offering a decent camera experience. A 3,900 mAh battery has also been rumored, but some sources suggest it could be slightly smaller.

With 12GB RAM and storage options ranging between 256GB and 512 GB, the Galaxy S25 Edge pricing is expected to start at around €1,249—or $1,377 USD when converted. Some rumors had indicated the smartphone would be a more humble $999, but these are just some early speculations.

Ultra Thin Phone Trend: Are Thin Smartphones the Goal in 2025?

Is the Galaxy S25 Edge delayed? Yes, it probably is, but the smartphone will still launch in 2025. The announcement of the Galaxy S25 came as rumors around the iPhone 17 Air were claiming the same feature in the Apple smartphone.

Around the same time, the 5.75mm-thin Tecno Spark Slim concept at the Mobile World Congress 2025 showed that Apple and Samsung weren’t the only ones contemplating releasing a thin, compact smartphone that still championed a premium appeal.

Oppo also launched the Find N5 at MWC 2025, which is currently the world’s thinnest book-style foldable available. Standing at 4.21mm when unfolded and 8.93mm when closed, the device is a technological marvel, combining the ultra thin phone trend with the foldable phone trends from the last two years with ease.

How Do We Feel About Thin Smartphones in 2025?

Do we really have a need for the ultra-thin phone trend? We can’t see the appeal. These smartphones appear more fragile, and they also compromise on some specs like the battery and camera set-up in order to make the slim form factor possible.

Considering the fact that most of us will slap on a phone case to keep these uber-expensive blocks of tech protected, the smartphones are bound to feel a little more bulky in the process, defeating their primary appeal. If a smartphone has nothing else to offer other than being thin, then its appeal is dulled to a degree, for us at least.

Still, we can’t argue against innovation, and if thin smartphones are in for 2025, then brands are bound to make at least one release to capitalize on the trend. We have no evidence that Google, Motorola, Nothing, or other smartphone brands are also jumping in on the trend, but we’re okay with that, as long as they make some decent upgrades to their future releases that don’t just involve a new AI feature.
