If Assassin’s Creed Shadows didn’t satisfy your craving for some samurai lore and action, you should know that the Ghost of Yotei release date has officially been confirmed. The PS5 samurai action game has been the center of much controversy ever since it was first announced, and the drama had nothing to do with the quality of the game or its gameplay—it was all about the “wokeness” of a female protagonist.

For gamers who can set their prejudice aside, a new Ghost of Yotei trailer was just revealed, and it looks both stunningly designed and wonderfully action-packed. The quality of Ghost of Yotei’s combat system and action mechanisms are going to be essential in determining just how good the game is, but for now, it’s the revenge story and visuals that have us hooked.

The new Ghost of Yotei trailer provides us with a detailed understanding of the story and the reason for Atsu’s quest for revenge.

Ghost of Yotei Release Date Confirmed for October 2, 2025—Ready to Pre-order?

Five years after Ghost of Tsushima first made its way to our consoles, we’re now to see Ghost of Yotei take place over 300 years after the setting of the original. Sucker Punch Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment released the second Ghost of Yotei trailer on April 23, and confirmed that the game was launching on October 2, 2025.

If you want to get in on the pre-orders for the new title, you’ll have to wait till May 2, 2025 at 10:00 AM in your local timezone, which is just over a week away.

What Is the New PS5 Samurai Action Game About?

The initial Ghost of Yotei trailer gave us much to ponder over with the game’s story and setting, but the Yotei trailer in 2025 adds some more juicy details. The game focuses on Atsu, a young samurai who had her family—and nearly her own life—taken away from her by a gang of extremely intimidating outlaws known as the Yotei Six.

Atsu swore to take revenge on the savage killers and trained hard to fight and become the best. She’s now back with her thirst of revenge and a kill list—The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito are all on it.

The new PS5 samurai game follows her journey to slay her foes, and while it’s largely fueled by her desire to get revenge, there’s also a lot she has to learn about life as she makes her way across Enzo. Mastering weapons, making friends, and growing her list of unlikely allies, Atsu’s journey will involve some difficult choices and fights.

The beauty of Ghost of Yotei cannot be denied—every scene looks detailed.

Ghost of Yotei Gameplay—What to Expect?

The Ghost of Yotei trailer mainly gives us a glimpse of the cinematics and story of the game rather than the intense action that gamers are after. Atsu’s mastery of the same katana that was used against her will be central to the gameplay, but all signs point to the fact that there will be a bigger arsenal of weapons you can employ, from a kusarigama and a spear to smaller daggers. Some firepower and advanced weaponry could also make it into the mix.

Exploring the open world will take up much of your time, and you’ll also have the freedom to decide to take off on bounty hunting side quests or slash out one of the foes on your kill list. You get to decide who you start with. In the new Ghost of Yotei 2025 trailer, Atsu is referred to as Situreinu, “one who is easily lost in the hunt.” This could hint at Atsu eventually having to rein in her search for revenge, or making tough decisions to keep herself whole.

There is the distinct possibility that you might be able to recruit allies to help in some way or even control Atsu’s wolf companion to even up the fights, but nothing has been confirmed.

How Do We Feel About Ghost of Yotei’s Upcoming Release?

Sony’s decision to release the Ghost of Yotei trailer early in 2025 without waiting for a PlayStation State of Play event is out of character, but the move is not unwelcome. Seeing how gamers have responded to the announcement and immediate release of The Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion remaster is definitely the strategy we want more publishers to follow. While we still have a long wait ahead of us for Ghost of Yotei’s release, it’s nice to have confirmed details rather than having to guess at it.

The $69.99 price tag for Ghost of Yotei has also reassured fans that we’re not stepping into an era of $100 games just yet. More than anything, fans are apprehensive about Ghost of Yotei being too similar to Ghost of Tsushima with its similar revenge plot and setting.

This could hurt the game sales, particularly when many will be boycotting it because of the female protagonist. There is also the possibility of it clashing with the release of GTA IV, if the game ever makes it to stores. The trailers so far offer a more bright and distinct look from the previous game, and we expect that there will be more in-game attributes that further set it apart.

For now, we’re looking forward to understanding how the new PS5 samurai action game evolves and expect that Sony will reveal more before its launch.
