After the success of the Nintendo Direct event from March 27, we assumed we would only hear big news from the company during the Switch 2 stream next week. As a result, the Live-action Zelda movie updates have come as a surprise, particularly because the news comes straight from Nintendo’s new app.

The live-action Zelda adaptation was first announced on November 23, 2024, but things have been relatively quiet ever since. Sony and Nintendo’s Zelda project has been interesting to consider, especially at a time when no one has wanted or appreciated a live-action remake of any of their favorite games and titles. Still, there’s a new Mortal Kombat movie that has managed to get us excited, so who’s to say the The Legend of Zelda live-action film won’t be equally exciting?

Live-Action Zelda Movie Updates: Maybe We Should Take the Nintendo Today App More Seriously

Wes Ball’s The Legend of Zelda movie was reconfirmed in a very unique way that was somehow still on brand for the gaming company—via the Nintendo Today app. The app was only just announced during the Nintendo Direct stream this week as a hub for news and updates on all things Nindtendo.

While we’d written it off as just another app to eat up our phone storage with its widget being its only selling point, it appears that Nintedo was ready for such a dismissal with updates that would force us to download the app. Using the platform to release the live-action Zelda movie updates they knew would draw our attention, Nintendo has successfully proven that it still has a hold over us with its breadcrumbs. Or at least Link and Zelda do, which is the only way these live-action adaptations get any viewers.

Legend of Zelda Movie Release Date: What We Know About the Movie?

The use of the Nintendo Today app to make the announcement is a little more exciting than the Live-action Zelda movie updates themselves. Very little was actually revealed other than a release date for the Live-action Zelda adaptation—March 26, 2027. The movie is so far away that we’ll likely have a few other unsatisfying live-action adaptations released before it, so it’s too soon to get seriously excited for its release.

The Zelda movie production news gave little else away. The movie is a Sony and Nintendo Zelda project that has Wes Ball as the director of the movie. His adaptations of The Maze Runner series were actually well-liked by the readers of the books, and the Kingdom of the Planet of Apes wasn’t too bad, either. He appears to be a good pick for leading this film.

Shigeru Miyamoto, a game developer and one of the creators behind the Zelda series, is working as a producer on the project, which is one reassuring detail about the upcoming film. Avi Arad is also a producer on the film. He’s had a role working on the Spiderman and Venom movies, so there are some good projects under his wing, although the mention of Morbius does sour the story. He is also involved in producing the live-action Naruto movie that we’d prefer not to think about.

Nintendo’s new app Zelda movie

We still have no specifics on how Sony and Nintendo’s new Zelda project is going to take shape. Keeping our fingers crossed in hope that they don’t mess up.

Fans Respond to the Zelda Movie Production News

The live-action Zelda movie updates don’t really give us any details on the script, cast, or other key details that would allow us to be excited about the upcoming release. What we do know is that in the absence of details, fans find something to mull over and hypothesize. In light of the Legend of Zelda movie release date being confirmed, fans have begun to cast their favorites and campaign for the involvement of these actors in the film.

The top pick for the leading lady, Zelda? It’s none other than Hunter Schafer, whose red-carpet photos are being circulated as evidence that she would be perfect for the role. Mike Faist as Link is another casting choice that could work well, but we’d be happy with Nintedo getting Hunter Schafer in on the adaptation. This is unlikely as gamers are professional haters who would sink the film before it got off the ground, but one can only hope for such an outcome.

The Legend of Zelda movie release date will closely follow the release of Sonic The Hedgehog movie on March 19, 2027, and will match the release of the next Godzilla x Kong on March 26. Almost two years away, but competition within the world of movies is already building up. The 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie did perform well in terms of revenue, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide, even though it was an uncomfortable watch for many. Nintedo is clearly looking to capitalize on another IP to a similar degree this time.

Fans of the series are largely unexcited about the upcoming film, particularly because live-action movies rarely do a good job of respecting and building on the source material. They also tend to look terrible. An animated version could make more fans happy, but that’s just not something these businesses tend to consider while milking their popular titles for all they’re worth.

Miyamoto’s involvement in the film could mean good things for the live-action Zelda adaptation, but we’ll wait to decide how we feel. Hearing Link speak is going to be interesting.
