The 1900s mafia scene has a sort of dusty charm that is hard to explain but there’s something exceedingly enjoyable about finding your place among some Italian mobsters who fear nothing. The new Mafia: The Old Country trailer just received an enthusiastic welcome for a game we didn’t know we were missing, returning us to the Mafia series albeit with a new tone and flavor.
Unlike the previous games, Mafia: The Old Country revealed a changed setting for the story, shifting away from urban landscapes to more rustic locations. Mafia’s mention of linear gameplay might have raised some eyebrows as this is something that would have ruined a game’s reputation in the past, but there is a big market for shorter, more straightforward games.
With two editions of the game available to pre-order, you might want to know what’s on offer with the new title. Let’s break down the Mafia release details.

The Mafia: The Old Country trailer looks great but its claim of a linear format and lack of open-world content has gamers calling it “low-quality” already.
Mafia: The Old Country Trailer Revealed
The Mafia trailer for 2025 was revealed by 2K and Hangar 13, with a release date and a list of devices the game will be playable on. Mafia: The Old Country will be released on August 8, 2025, and it will be coming to PlayStation5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and NVIDIA GeForce NOW. Apart from releasing the trailer, the team also held a panel earlier today where the developers shared some insights from their experience working on the game.
What the Mafia Trailer Revealed About the Game Setting
Choc full of gunfights, eerie catacombs, and suave old-timey cars, the Mafia trailer for 2025 looks exceptional. The trailer swings from open locations under blue skies to elaborate homes with luxe decor with ease, showing just how the game will give a taste of a few different settings and locations instead of just dark urban city streets.

The Mafia: The Old Country trailer also showcases an unexpectedly high number of horses and knife fights for a game about the Mafia but the altered aesthetic doesn’t detract from the excitement surrounding the game, it only enhances it. PlayStation confirmed that the hand combat is inspired by “Sicilian knife-fighting traditions,” which fits the game very nicely. From pistols to shotguns, there appear to be a number of weapons to choose from.
The trailer showcases the 1900s Sicily setting with a flourish, allowing gamers to see that the change in location will not diminish the action and violence of the game in the slightest.

Gun fights are only part of the combat—knife fights make up a large part of the trailer.
The Mafia Story: What Is Enzo Up To?
Along with the Mafia: The Old Country trailer PlayStation also released a blog post that detailed the storyline. The game follows protagonist Enzo Favara, who is off to complete the mission he was tasked with by Don Torrisi. After a rough upbringing and a life of working in the mines, Enzo is finally ready to prove himself to Torrisi and make a name for himself.
Very little is known about the mission, but Torrisi prompts Enzo to pursue “loyalty, honor, and obedience,” in tying up the matter and resolving the task. From what we can see, the mission takes him through sprawling country roads and shady corridors down under. The game designers are certainly proud of their in-game vehicles, and they should be because the rides look great.
Revealing some essential details about the Mafia 2025 gameplay, the blog states that you might have guns at your disposal, but you must use them sparingly in order to make them last, ”every bullet counts.”

Mafia Game Positioning: Is There an Audience for This Game?
Now that GTA 6 has been postponed to 2026, the door is wide open for other studios to release their titles to a more receptive audience. There is more than enough room for multiple action games on the market, and while 2025 has been dominated by sci-fi or fantasy titles like Clair Obscur Expedition 33 or DOOM: The Dark Ages, a more realistic action game would still be more than welcome.
The developers have confirmed that the new Mafia title will have a more linear gameplay with a less bloated structure, which should work just fine for a title like this. There is a big audience out there that wants to try something engaging without having to commit endless hours to experience it. There’s no open-world, exploratory content here, which is also acceptable for the style of the game.
While there is still a decent emphasis on story and lore, good combat is what will make or break this game, and so far, the new Mafia: The Old Country trailer suggests the gameplay is solid.
