The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra wooden-back phone is set on revitalizing the steel and aluminum-focused world of smartphones, switching it out with wood and vegan leather. The company just unveiled its new Edge series phones and it includes three new devices in the lineup—Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, Motorola Edge 50 Pro, and Motorola Edge 50 Fusion. With AI enhancements and an unprecedented Pantone-validated smartphone camera and display, there’s a lot to look forward to with the new launch. One of the standout features of the Moto Edge 50 Ultra is the real wood backing to the device, which is a design concept that was previously introduced in the Moto X released in 2013.

How Do We Feel About the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra wooden-back phone?

In the bygone eras and days of the past, wooden casing for electronics was the norm. Over time we moved away to cheaper, lighter, more sleek design options but there’s something about wood paneling that spells out “classic.” The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra wooden-back phone doesn’t necessarily bring smooth teakwood or a dark walnut to the table, yet the upgraded design is interesting. Considering a wooden appearance can be achieved by a phone case too, what else is special about the new phone?

The device has a 6.7-inch pOLED borderless display with 1220p Super HD resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 8S Gen3 chipset, bringing Qualcomm’s AI engine to the mix with 16GB RAM. With 50W TurboPower wireless charging and 125W TurboPower charging capabilities, the 4500 mAh battery can promise over 30 hours of use.

The Motorola Edge 50 wood option comes with a warning of avoiding temperatures over 50°C, around 122°F, for prolonged periods of time. The real wood detail also comes with the unfortunate downside of degrading with exposure to water and dust, but there should be no serious issues otherwise. The device has an IP68 water and dust resistance standard so while it is a sturdy smartphone, it’s meant for those who don’t have an overly active lifestyle.

Motorola Edge 50 Camera Details—What Does a Pantone-Validated Camera and Display Mean?

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra wooden-back phone comes with a Pantone-validated smartphone camera and display which means the device captures color the same way you find it in the world around you. “Every Pantone Validated device has met Pantone’s evaluation and grading criteria by authentically simulating the full range of real-world Pantone Colors,” so when you use your Motorola Edge 50 to take a picture, the photo is as realistic as the color tones can get.

This feature could be a big deal for those who enjoy photography and want to shoot videos without investing heavily in editing, so content creators should have a blast using the new device. In terms of the specific camera specs, the device has a 50 MP main camera with a 1/1.3-inch sensor and advanced laser autofocus technology for quicker focus capabilities. There is another 64 MP telephoto lens that showcases 3x optical zoom and 100x Super Zoom which can make photography a breeze. The final lens is a 122° 50 MP ultra-wide lens that also works as a macro lens. For selfies, an integral part of using a smartphone, there’s a 50 MP camera that can get the job done.

We Love an AI Moment and Motorola Knows It

The Motorola wood phone as it’s bound to be known, comes with AI tools for Google Photos. Features like the Magic Editor and Photo Unblur will be available for smartphone users from May 8, 2024. For those who adore customization just as we do, the Motorola Edge Ultra can help you snap images of your outfit and generate four wallpaper options that you can choose to match your aesthetic for the day, which is a fun little way to showcase your identity on the go.

The AI enhancements extend to the shooting modes and camera stabilization ability on the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra wooden-back phone. The phone also guarantees blur-free shots with automatic adjustments of the shutter speed, and additional auto-focus tracking as a subject moves around the frame.

Additional Features of the Motorola Edge 50 Series

The Motorola wood version will be accompanied by vegan leather smartphone options—a pink peach fuzz variant and a Forest Grey one—which also looks quite nice. While Samsung and other brands are leaving curved edges behind, the edge lights on the Motorola Edge 50 can bring alerts to you even when you have the phone face down in admiration of the wood backing. The device has some fun little gestures to make it easier to integrate into your day. You can “chop” your phone downwards to turn on the torch, twist your wrist to open up the camera and capture an image, and use a three-finger swipe-down to capture a screenshot.

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra will go on sale in Europe at €1,000 and will soon be available in Asia, Latin America, and other regions. The Edge 50 Pro will start at €699 and the Edge 50 Fusion will be priced at €399. There is no information out on the device’s U.S. release, but a parallel series should be available in the upcoming months so keep your eyes peeled.
