Ideally, we’d love to fill our Nintendo Switch 2 updates article with a release date and a list of confirmed specs but unfortunately, this isn’t the case. What we do have are new Nintendo Switch 2 FCC leaks that give us some insight into the connectivity capabilities of the upcoming console.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was confirmed on January 16, 2025, but the release date for the gadget was not revealed with the announcement. Fans have been eager to see some confirmation on the device, but all we have to offer for now are the Switch 2 connectivity features. Faster Wi-Fi and charging as well as Amiibo and NFC support are on the list of expectations.

Nintendo Switch 2 Updates: FCC Leaks Give Us a Glimpse of Some Features

The Switch 2’s Wi-Fi 6 and NFC capabilities were brought to us by The Verge, as it was the first to take note of the FCC filings for the upcoming gadget. The Wi-Fi 6 connectivity means the device could be much faster than its predecessor, seeing as the earlier device only offered support for Wi-Fi 5.

WiFi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 connectivity would have been a bigger deal, to meet the latest tech standards and ensure prolonged use, but it’s good that the device is making some progress with its connectivity. The Xbox Series X/S only has support for Wi-Fi 5 and there are no full-fledged console launches expected for the next year at least, however, things may be different with rumored handheld releases this year. The PlayStation 5 also offers only Wi-Fi 6 support but the PS5 Pro does support Wi-Fi 7.

Gamers should also note that the Nintendo Switch 2 FCC leaks only mentioned testing for 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, and not the 6GHz band which would be the faster option. The Nintendo Switch 2 updates suggest some upgrades, but only a step above what was already offered.

Nintendo Switch 2 Gaming Console Rumors Mention NFC Support

The Nintendo Switch 2 FCC leaks also revealed that the console will offer NFC support. There is little reason for seeking NFC on a handheld console except for the integration with Amiibo figures. If you don’t know what that is, these are physical figurines that you can collect which come with an NFC tag inside. These transmit small bits of data into your game, bringing you different types of rewards and items to your game experience.

Not everyone cares about Amiibo figures, which is a fair preference. However, for those interested, this is a fun little integration that you can experience with your console. The RFID feature is expected to be integrated into the right Joy-Con, just like it was with the initial Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2 Updates on Charging

Switch 2’s Wi-Fi 6 and NFC support aside, we also learned that the device will have two USB-C ports for charging. One will be placed at the top and the other on the bottom, giving you some room to set it up to your liking. Will the two ports serve an additional purpose? That remains unclear.

You may also see a 20V adapter, which would be a leg-up from the previous 15V adapter, even if the difference is marginal. That said, we haven’t seen any evidence to suggest that the console’s charging speeds will also go up as that is still rated at 15V. Do what you will with that information.

Other Switch 2 Gaming Console Rumors

The Nintendo Switch 2 FCC leaks give us a peek at some of the new connectivity features of the handheld, but there’s still a lot that remains unknown. The C button on the Switch and its purpose remains a mystery and we still don’t know what the USB-C port is for. The Joy-Con attachment system has been changed to click on magnetically and there are likely some other connectivity upgrades that have not been revealed yet.

We’re assuming that Bluetooth headphone support will be a given at launch this time around, and the headphone jack is also a reassuring presence for those who like their wired headsets. A Nintendo Switch 2 communication patent discovered by Wccftech indicates that we could see some improved voice chat features that will communication with others a lot smoother.

Waiting for Nintendo Direct For More Switch 2 Updates

If you’re among those waiting for a Switch 2 release date to be announced, you should ensure you tune into the Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 2, 2025, at 9 AM ET or 6 AM PST. The event should give some solid Nintendo Switch 2 updates with the expected specs and features all set for release.

The Nintendo Switch 2 updates will remain incomplete until we get more insight into the precise specs and release date, but for now, we’re excited to see where we go with this gadget. We’re still waiting to hear about Analogue’s 4K N64 console release this year, and Xbox’s rumored handheld console has also given us some hope that we’re going to see some really noteworthy hardware make a debut in 2025.
