The dream of a powered-up AI assistant is something tech makers are doing their best to bring to fruition and OpenAI isn’t holding back either. The AI maker is actively working to bring us a ChatGPT “super assistant” in 2025, doing everything in its power to dethrone Alexa, Siri, and Gemini, and give us something more advanced. Recent reports on the ChatGPT all-purpose assistant have emerged through documents revealed during the US Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Google.

Although the document was highly redacted and outdated considering it was formulated in 2024, it lays out OpenAI’s ChatGPT 2025 roadmap in detail. Showcasing the company’s plans to make the chatbot an “AI super assistant that deeply understands you and is your interface to the internet,” the documents show us what a large number of tech giants want for their users—complete reliance on their tools for everyday needs.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Super Assistant Could Be Coming Soon If Things Are on Track Internally

OpenAI crashed onto the tech scene with a flourish a few years ago and has since redefined the global approach to AI. The company’s AI chatbot remains one of the most used conversational tools to this day, however, OpenAI has always had greater hopes for its application. The “ChatGPT: H1 2025 Strategy” document makes it clear that the company is looking to upgrade the tool from one used for occasional conversations and searches to something that can be utilized for all our daily tasks, from helping with planning trips to taking notes during meetings.

Microsoft has similar goals for its Copilot integration across its services and Google is also going ham inserting Gemini into every facet of every platform. Considering these integrations, it’s no surprise that an OpenAI ChatGPT super assistant could be on the cards.

ChatGPT’s Future Plans Involve Its Evolution Into an Intelligent Assistant

From the documents revealed during the antitrust trial, we know that OpenAI had plans to use the first half of 2025 to establish the tool as one that was privy to the personal information of the user, which it could use to build trust and assist the user with their daily life.

“In the first half of next year, we’ll start evolving ChatGPT into a super-assistant: one that knows you, understands what you care about, and helps with any task that a smart, trustworthy, emotionally intelligent person with a computer could do,” the document explains the ChatGPT upgrade for 2025.

It also explains that with the more advanced models of the AI now smart enough to reliably perform agentic tasks, the company can build it up to take independent action and respond in a manner that makes it a reliable aid for the user.

OpenAI’s AI Strategy Becomes More Evident with Its Pivot to Hardware

OpenAI recently announced its partnership with ex-Apple designer Jony Ive and the news made headlines instantly. In a video released with the announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed the future of AI with Ive, expressing the need for new hardware to support the ongoing advancements in software. AI tools are currently limited to the smartphones and computers we use, but introducing new forms for the tool could make AI more directly accessible and also attract a new set of users.

In the highly redacted document, the potential of ChatGPT as an all-purpose assistant was made abundantly clear, exploring how this super assistant had “T-shaped skills” that could be put to use for generic and niche tasks in equal measure. The document explains the goal of making life easier for the user by having the AI answer questions, find homes, contact lawyers, sign up for a gym, plan vacations, buy gifts, and perform a host of other tasks. The goal was to make the AI the go-to for all user needs, regardless of whether they were at home or outside.

We’ve already witnessed AI encroach into the territory of coding with GPT 4.1. This is something other advanced AI tools are capable of as well, but OpenAI does appear to be a top choice for many. This omniscient, ever-present future of ChatGPT’s next phase is terrifying to consider, but it is something we’ll get used to, the same way we’ve normalized having an always-on Alexa in many of our homes.

OpenAI Remains Confident in Its Ability to Meet These Advanced Targets

The OpenAI ChatGPT “super assistant” may sound like an ambitious goal and that’s because it is. With so many tech giants competing to place themselves at the front of the race, the competition is fierce. OpenAI acknowledges that there are some roadblocks to overcome, such as building up infrastructure that can keep up with the demands on its AI tools, as “growth and revenue won’t line up forever.”

Still, OpenAI appears determined to put its popularity to good use and ensure that regulations are put in place so other competitors cannot lock them out of their platforms. We would be happier to see more regulations on such callous use and promotion of AI, but that’s a separate battle that tech giants would much rather ignore.

“We have what we need to win: one of the fastest-growing products of all time, a category-defining brand, a research lead (reasoning, multimodal), a compute lead, a world-class research team, and an increasing number of effective people with agency who are motivated to ship,” OpenAI explains with regard to its AI strategy.

OpenAI Doesn’t Have to Invest In Marketing, ChatGPT is a Brand Like No Other

In the document, OpenAI also briefly referenced how it does not have too many expenses on marketing, and it’s true—ChatGPT sells itself. The AI name has become synonymous with Google searches among young GenZers, and there is a rising flood of users replacing the therapists they never had with OpenAI’s chatbot.

The recent flood of users using ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities to imitate the art style of renowned animator and storyteller Hayao Miyazaki created a polarizing internet trend that the company didn’t have to promote—although Altman did egg on the plagiarism among his Twitter/X followers.

The ChatGPT AI assistant wouldn’t have to work too hard to convince users to make it the top choice for their daily needs, as many who are curious about AI already turn to the tool despite the options currently available to them. Even with a large portion of ChatGPT freely available, the company has enough paid subscribers who continue investing in its tools. It is evident that we are headed towards an AI-powered future and OpenAI has a clear advantage in leading the transition.

The ChatGPT Super Assistant Is Coming to Life Already

The released document from 2024 may not give us a direct update on how much progress has been made in bringing the ChatGPT super assistant to life in the present, but it’s obvious that OpenAI is drawing closer to its goal. In January, OpenAI revealed its Operator tool for Pro subscribers and this was a huge step towards realizing the dream of an all-purpose assistant.

The AI support tool can help subscribers with ordering groceries, purchasing tickets, or other daily tasks. It does require user confirmation before sending out an email and has some safeguards in place to curtail any illegal tasks, so the Operator tool currently lacks full autonomy. OpenAI’s rollout of ChatGPT 4 has also been a massive step forward in the company’s image generation capabilities and its Codex AI coding assistant has made its presence felt in the coding community.

Overall, OpenAI’s ambitious ChatGPT upgrade for 2025 has not seen it turn into the “super assistant” yet, but the company appears well on its way to materializing the goal. There are external concerns around AI hallucinations and the proliferation of tools that put users’ safety at risk, but these concerns don’t mean that AI companies are about to slow down and rethink their approach to being number one. We’re only halfway through the year, so it’s likely that we’ll hear more about ChatGPT’s future plans in the coming months.
