Xiaomi just unveiled the Xiaomi SU7 EV, an electric car it hopes will be able to compete with the likes of Porsche and Tesla soon enough. The Xiaomi electric car was officially announced in Beijing during the Stride Xiaomi EV Technology Launch event, and little is known about the availability or the SU7 EV price, but it does look like the company is taking a huge leap ahead from the eclectic scooters which were the last locomotives the company had designed for the public. The Xiaomi SU7 EV comes with the tagline “speed is a belief” echoed in the name of the car as well, the SU, or the Speed Ultra, and that seems to be the primary selling point of the car as well—apart from its identity as an electric car of course.

The Xiaomi SU7 specs and design that were showcased during the event were quite impressive, however, it’s unclear if the car will be able to attract enough sellers to make it a lucrative endeavor.

Considering the Xiaomi SU7 EV’s compatibility with Xiaomi’s HyperOS operating system and its ecosystem of electronic services, the idea of the smartphone maker designing an electric car might not be as far-fetched, but Chief Executive Lei Jun does not intend to just have another car on the market. According to him, with 15-20 years of hard work, Xiaomi could make its way to entering the list of the top 5 automakers in the world, overtaking industry leaders who have been in the game much longer. The current claims state the Xiaomi electric car is capable of speeds much faster than Tesla and Porsche EVs, which will be fascinating to test when the car is officially available.
The Xiaomi website indicates that the EV can achieve a top speed of 265 km per hour with a 0-100km/h acceleration of just 2.78s. With two versions that should be available according to EndGadget, the dual-motor all-wheel-drive SU7 Max, and the single-motor rear-wheel-drive SU7, the Xiaomi SU7 EV will flaunt three distinct colors—Aqua Blue, Mineral Gray, and Verdant Green. The distinct design of the Xiaomi electric car is quite attractive, combining the sports car aesthetic with a car that could pass for everyday use, the Xiaomi SU7 specs are quite distinct.

Reports indicate that many top talents from the industry have collaborated to make the Xiaomi SU7 EV a reality, from ex-BMW employee Tianyuan Li to Mercedes-Benz’s James Qiu. According to Reuters, Xiaomi’s electric car was marketed as an answer to China’s cold winters, currently the coldest on record, with fast charging capabilities in low temperatures and tech that can identify obstacles like snowfall. The design details of the Xiaomi SU7 EV are quite appealing to look at. The water drop-shaped headlights are quite distinct and the halo ring tail lights designed with 360 ultra-red LEDs provide quite a futuristic look to the electric car. The wraparound cockpit is quite an interesting detail, even if it looks a little empty compared to other cars that offer the detail, like the classy Bentley Mulliner Bacalar. The design of the car includes many air ducts and curves that the company states are meant to reduce the drag and wind resistance on the Xiaomi electric car, quoting an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.195. The car also has a spoiler that can be brought up at the touch of a button—one of the only few buttons considering a majority of the interactions with the car are controlled by a screen.

Speaking of screens, the car boasts of 5—a 16-inch central control screen, a 56-inch heads-up display, a flip-up instrument screen and two optional screens for the rear seats. The Xiaomi SU7 EV fully commits to its electronic design and additionally integrates smart tech into its offerings as well. Powered by the NVIDIA Drive Orin chip, Xiaomi’s electric car has industry-leading processing power and along with lidar has an ecosystem of tech that should simplify driving to a great degree, especially considering its Xiaomi Pilot platform for autonomous driving. The entertainment system is reportedly powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295, allowing for efficiency in accessing media and providing a well-rounded audio experience with the 23 Dolby Atmos speakers.
The 800V high-voltage battery of the Xiaomi SU7 Max EV promises superfast charging and a CLTC range (China light-duty vehicle test cycle) of 800 km (497 miles) with 101kWh of electricity. The electric car runs on Xiaomi’s very own Super Motor V6 showcasing speeds of up to 21,000rpm. Even the luggage space is set to be more impressive than the Tesla’s, with the front luggage space at 105 liters and the trunk at 517 liters. With its self-developed cooling system and smart chassis, the Xiaomi electric car could very well live up to the hopes that the makers have attached to this electric vehicle.

There are no clear estimations on the SU7 EV price but CEO Lei Jun has repeated that the car won’t be cheap. While many are excited about the coming of the Xiaomi SU7 and SU7 Max, others appear skeptical of the vehicle, calling it a blatant copy of the Porsche Taycan. If the price falls at a lower rung then many might be convinced to make the purchase and drive what looks like a luxury vehicle but how many will really be swayed remains undetermined. If the Xiaomi SU7 specs hold up in the Chinese electric vehicle market, that will be a pretty impressive start for the company even before the international response to it.
