The Nintendo Switch 2 launch has turned a simple console release into a cultural phenomenon, rewriting what it means to bring a new gaming device to the market. The scale of interest around the release of the Switch 2 has been astounding, the conversation around it elevated to new levels even before the device was formally announced. The moment pre-orders opened up, there was a rush among fans to write their names on the roster in hopes of being among the first to secure their own gaming units.
The official date for the Switch 2 release, June 5, 2025, has now come and gone, and unsurprisingly, the console has been flying off the shelves. Gamers across the globe stood sentry outside stores, and while many were able to claim victory and walk home with the spoils of the war, complaints around the Switch 2 shortages have been heard as well.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Sees a Mix of Happy and Angry Fans
It is far too soon to translate the Switch 2 sales and demand into concrete numbers, but Nintendo’s sales forecasts predict the company will sell 15 million Switch 2 units in the current financial year ending in March 2026, along with 4.5 million Switch units. Despite the discussion around the handheld being too expensive at $449.99 and the games being similarly pricey at $79.99, there is a clear demand for both and it does not look to be going away anytime soon.
Switch 2 day-one updates from New York to Japan have found eager customers willing to wait in line or try their luck at a lottery for a spot to purchase their consoles. After eight years of waiting for a successor to the original Switch, many are willing to go that extra mile to buy the Switch 2.

Switch 2 Demand vs Supply—Are There Enough Units to Go Around?
When pre-orders initially opened, it immediately stirred up controversy around the Switch 2 supply vs demand as the pre-order process was full almost immediately, and it was unclearly if Nintendo was sufficiently prepared to handle it. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that 2.2 million people in Japan had entered the lottery for the opportunity to purchase the Switch 2 on launch day.
It was immediately evident that Nintendo would struggle to keep up with the demands, particularly in Japan. The additional pressure of the tariffs in the US complicated matters, making it harder to determine how Nintendo would balance the cost of production and distribution while keeping the price unchanged.
Now Nintendo managed to launch its device during the 90-day pause on tariffs to keep it safe from inflated pricing, but this might change later in the year. This is another reason why the Switch 2 shortage is upsetting for fans who don’t want to pay more for it later in the year, especially around the holidays. Overall, there is a greater demand than supply for the Nintendo Switch 2, despite the company’s best efforts to keep the stocks coming in and the customers happy.
Switch 2 Pre-order Problems
Initially, it appeared that pre-ordering the console was the best option, but many issues have been encountered. In some cases, those who were able to pre-order the Switch 2 saw their orders cancelled without hesitation, leaving them frustrated by the outcome.
A HUGE SHOUTOUT to @Walmart for canceling my pre-order for the Nintendo switch 2 console I made OVER A MONTH AGO!! The claimed “we do not have item in stock” and check back later!? IT WAS A PRE ORDER!!! Beyond pissed.. sounds like this is happening to thousands of people.. pic.twitter.com/gjmiCMpdQZ

Some naysayers have come online to say that this shortage is manufactured by Nintendo to sensationalize its release, but right now, it’s in Nintendo’s best interest to get as many orders out as possible before the prices go up and people begin rethinking their decision to buy the Switch 2.
I’mma just say it. The switch 2 shortage scares are complete bullshit to make you FOMO and buy it.

Those who pre-order the console were also hoping they would be able to get their devices on or before launch day, but they likely have a longer wait ahead of them. There have been complaints online targeted at Nintendo and other retailers that offered the pre-order option, with gamers annoyed that it was easier for them to walk into a store and buy the console instead of waiting for their device to be delivered.
You guys didn’t even create shipping labels until today for pre-order Switch 2’s? And now it’s slipping a day? This is such crap @Target @AskTarget you had over a month to figure this out. pic.twitter.com/M30wF1PRPB

The Switch 2 Release Encounters Problems on the Way
While the tariff emergency has been set aside for now, the Switch 2’s shortages aren’t the only problem gamers have encountered. The handheld’s packaging has been minimized as far as possible to cut down on waste and keep things secure inside the box, but this has led to some issues. Buyers from one specific GameStop outlet found that their receipts had been stapled to the front of the box by the employees, but this caused the staple to go straight through the packaging to the console screen.
This caused puncture holes in some of the displays, leaving customers aghast when they finally got home and opened up the boxes. Thankfully, the issues appear to have occurred at a single location and a Reddit thread claims that GameStop is willing to replace the affected devices. This is a good outcome for the affected customers, but not so great for those who have to watch another device go off the market without getting their hands on one of these marvels.

The Switch 2 launch mishaps are an inevitable part of such a large-scale pressure-fueled release, and not necessarily a problem that anyone could have foreseen.
Where to Buy the Switch 2?
Most of the stock that came with the Switch 2 release for day-one sales in 2025 appears to be sold out across locations so you might have to wait patiently for a restock. Your best bet is to track the nearest retailers closely to see if they have plans to bring in a fresh batch of consoles soon.
You can also keep your eyes on their online pages and refresh regularly to see if they have updated their stock, but this is a time-consuming endeavor. Your top choices for buying the Switch 2 should be Walmart, BestBuy, Target, Newegg, BJs, GameStop, and of course Nintendo’s own page. Verizon, Antonline, and Sam’s Club may be other portals to check as well, along with Amazon.
Was the Switch 2 Launch Successful?
In most cases, the lack of sufficient stock could be seen as a lack of preparedness by the company, but considering the scale of demand for the Switch 2, the shortage was inevitable. So far, the device is going off the shelves as quickly as employees can place them there, so it’s obvious that the Switch 2 launch has been successful. Will the demand for the handheld die down in the coming months? At least for 2025, this appears very unlikely.
Most of the determined fans who couldn’t make launch day purchases will inevitably stalk every platform available to them in order to purchase the console, and it will take Nintendo the rest of the year to keep up with their demands. From its promotions, the Switch 2 has proven itself to be worth this level of excitement, so we don’t expect to see the early reviews lean too far toward negative feedback that dissuades buyers from their purchase.
We expect to see the demand for the Nintendo Switch 2 remain sky-high until the end of 2026, after which the sales numbers may slow down to a degree, waiting for Switch users to consider an upgrade or other platform gamers to make the shift to Nintendo’s offerings. All in all, this has been a very successful launch for the gaming company.
