We’ve all made fun of GTA 6 and the delay in its release, but it isn’t the only sequel that’s taking forever to make an appearance. It’s 2025, almost eight since the initial announcement was made, but there’s still no The Elder Scrolls 6 trailer or release update in sight. Expectant fans were hoping the recent Xbox showcase would hold a surprise reveal for The Elder Scroll 6, but there was no sign of it anywhere to be seen.
Estimates around the TES6 launch timeline now suggest that the game will not grow any closer to release for another two years at least. Bethesda has been playing it safe for years now, giving up no details about the game or how much progress has been made on it. The Elder Scrolls 6’s development status remains unknown and all we have to go on is an announcement from 2018 to reassure us that the game does, in fact, exist.
Microsoft previously indicated that the game wouldn’t be out for another five years back in 2023, so it might have been wishful thinking to hope we would hear about the game this year. 2028 is a long way away, but it could be the earliest we see a formal The Elder Scrolls 6 announcement update.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Trailer Is Nowhere to Be Seen—What Is Taking Bethesda So Long?
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the last real game in the series, was released on November 11, 2011. The game sold over 60 million copies by June 2023, almost 12 years after its initial release. Later, The Elder Scrolls Online was made available on April 2, 2014, and the game has had a big role in keeping the community alive for all these years, but it wasn’t the mainline launch gamers were looking for.
More recently, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was released this year on April 20, building up the original title from 2006 on Unreal Engine 5. The game was an instant hit among fans both old and new, and its release proved that The Elder Scroll gamers were still alive and kicking. There is a clear demand for more content in the series, but unlike with other titles like Silent Hill, the next mainline release is nowhere to be seen.
The Elder Scrolls 6 Development Status: Nothing to See Here
The Xbox Games Showcase was the perfect opportunity for Bethesda to reveal The Elder Scrolls 6 trailer and let fans know how the game was progressing. If a gameplay or cinematic trailer was out of the question, even an update on development or key visuals would have made some fans happy enough to forget about other details from the event, such as the release of the Xbox handheld. Yes, it would have been that big of a deal.
All that we heard with regard to this series was a trailer for the updates coming to The Elder Scrolls Online on June 18. The Seasons Of The Worm Cult Part 1 expansion is set to arrive on consoles on June 18, 2025, after a successful week of being available for PC players. It’s something to look forward to, but it isn’t what fans were looking for. We have to stop and ask ourselves, have we been pushing for an update too soon?
According to the Gaming Bible, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer had revealed that the Starfield team was working on The Elder Scrolls 6 back when the former game was just getting set for launch. This means TES6 won’t be out before 2028 at the earliest. It seems we have all collectively forgotten that one minor detail and are now suffering for our own sins of forgetting.
Unfortunately, the lack of updates in 2025 says just as much as a trailer would have—The Elder Scrolls 6 is not going to be released in the near future. It is unclear why Bethesda announced the game all those years ago if it was this far behind in its development. Some rumors suggest that the game could be undergoing some drastic changes furthering the delay, but there is no intel to confirm or deny it.
Confirmed Details for the Elder Scrolls 6—We Know Very Little So Far
Some rumors of an internal The Elder Scrolls 6 trailer have been making the rounds at Microsoft, but this does not mean a real trailer of the game is out there. This could just be a progress report for the executives and not one that will ever make an appearance online, but fans remain hopeful that Bethesda will surprise us.
All we know for now is that it will be an open-world RPG that will play similarly to its predecessors and support mods when it is out. Fans have guessed that the game could be set in High Rock or Hammerfell, but these are only assumptions based on very minor details from the initial announcement.
Todd Howard revealed a minor detail about The Elder Scrolls 6 during an interview, stating that it would be built on the same Creation Engine 2 as Starfield. It is unlikely that Microsoft and Bethesda will take too many risks with the format in what is set to be their biggest launch in decades, especially after Starfield didn’t take off the way the publishers had hoped. The game was still a success to be sure, but it has faced considerable criticism since launch.
The team at Bethesda is hoping that when they finally come out with a The Elder Scrolls 6 trailer and eventually release the game, it will enjoy the same popularity as Skyrim did. It is far too early to estimate if this is really possible, but one can hope that the title will live up to fan expectations when it finally makes a debut.
