The smart wearable segment is slowly but surely expanding, with Acer announcing a new AI-powered wearable in the smart ring category. The new Acer smart ring, titled the Acer FreeSense Ring, was unveiled for the Computex 2025 event in Taipei, Taiwan. A full unveiling is likely in the coming week, but we have a few details on what to expect.

The ultra-lightweight titanium alloy ring is out to give competitors like the Oura, Circular, and Samsung Galaxy rings a run for their money, widening the segment with a new subscription-free alternative. The AI wearable announcement has given us a glimpse into what to expect, but the company has not revealed a launch date or any information on when you can get one on your hands, so it’s too early to test the ring out for a full review.

While we wait for more updates on the Acer smart ring, here’s what we know so far.

Acer AI Wearables Make a Debut—A New Smart Ring Emerges on the Horizon

Acer Gadget, a subsidiary of Acer Inc., introduced the Acer FreeSense Ring for its upcoming showcase in Taipei, unveiling a new device with 24/7 biometric tracking in seven sizes. The ring is expected to be available in sizes 7 to 13, which is a smaller selection than the Oura and a wider one than the Amazfit Helio ring.

We still don’t know how the Acer AI wearable will allow you to check for sizing, but that detail should be announced when the release date is finalized. As for what we do know, the list of details is still admittedly small.

Acer FreeSense Ring Design—What Does the New AI Wearable Look Like?

Just as we discussed, the Acer AI gadget will be available in seven sizes for users to find the right fit. It features a titanium build with a PVD external coating and an epoxy internal design. The sensors do not lie flush with the interior so this might be a cause for concern, but not to the point of discomfort. There are two color options on offer, a Rose Gold with a matte finish and a Black option with a glossy finish.

Weighing between 2 and 3 grams, the device is extremely lightweight, making it a more comfortable and discrete alternative to a smartwatch or the WHOOP band on your wrist. The product specifications also mention a 5ATM water rating, which means water resistance up to 50 meters, with an IP68 water and dust resistance rating. This means you can use the ring comfortably without fear or damage, whether indoors or outdoors.

Health and Wellness Features Mentioned in the AI Wearables Announcement

Acer AI wearables may look like any other smart ring, but the decision to invest in one will depend on its capabilities. The Acer FreeSense Ring is equipped with advanced biometric sensors for 24/7 tracking of heart rate, heart variability, blood oxygen levels, and sleep quality.

The data is analyzed through a companion mobile app that uses AI-powered insights to generate personalized wellness insights and provide lifestyle recommendations to users. The advantage of the Acer smart ring over some of its competitors is that these AI wellness reports and other features are not locked behind additional paywalls. Users get full access to the health data without having to keep paying a subscription fee to beg Acer to let them know what’s what.

Final Thoughts on the No-Subscription Smart Ring

On the surface of things, the new Acer smart ring looks like a valuable addition to the AI wearable category. The device looks just like the other smart rings on the market so its design is not particularly unique, but it has all the basic capabilities you’d want in a smart ring. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough information to determine just how good it is. The details on the sleep tracking are limited and we have no way of knowing the quality of the insights that will be provided on the app.

Will it offer any additional cycle tracking for women? Can we expect it to count steps and track movement? Will it have a decent battery life and last us a few days without a charge? What does the charging mechanic look like? How expensive will this all add up to be, even without the subscription fee? There is a lot of information missing right now. We’ll have to wait for Acer’s future announcements to know just what to expect, but we’ll update this space when we hear more during the Computex 2025 trade show.

For now, the AI wearables announcement has been well received and it’s going to be interesting to see Acer explore a new category of gadgets that are entirely different from its traditional offerings. The company also announced a pair of new earbuds, the Acer AI TransBuds, along with a new e-bike, so it’s evident that the brand wants to be known for more than just high-powered laptops.
