Returning to our regularly scheduled programming with the first big smartphone event of the year, the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 is all set to take place on 17 January. Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event always brings a much-awaited Galaxy phone launch with it, and the S24 series is set to headline this year. Last year was the era of the flip phone as we saw the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 make their appearance during the July 2023 Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. This year, we expect the event to be all about AI instead, the very topical buzzword set to redefine technology in 2024. While Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed the rumor, we’re certain that the event is going to witness the debut of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series with its Galaxy AI ready to take center stage.

What to Expect from Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024

On 3 January, Samsung announced the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event scheduled for 17 January at 10 am PST, inviting its audience to be a part of the San Jose event. The announcement did not include any hints of what we could expect from the event, other than the mention that Samsung was “Opening a New Era of Mobile AI,” a clear reference to the Samsung Galaxy S24 series and the Galaxy AI. For those wondering where to watch the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event, the invitation also announced that the event would be available to stream on the Samsung website, Samsung Newsroom page, and Samsung’s YouTube channel as well.

The Galaxy AI that has everyone excited was first introduced in November during the Samsung AI Forum 2023, when Samsung announced that they were bringing a native artificial intelligence tool Samsung Gauss—named after mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss—to their devices. As a result of significant research and work on Large Language Models, the company announced that it would soon be introducing an on-device AI with the three components of its system—Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code and Samsung Gauss Image.

The company also revealed one of the features that the Galaxy AI would support, which was an AI Live Translate Call tool. Through this, users should now be able to see text and audio translation in real-time, the AI automatically translating the content of a call into a language that you understand. This should allow users from anywhere across the globe to communicate without having to actually learn a new language or pick up a neutral one that they both share. Essentially, the feature can provide captions or subtitles in a different language as the conversation takes place. With the tool being available on-device, users won’t have to turn to a cloud or central server and worry about having their data leaked either.

The Samsung Galaxy S24—Introducing Samsung’s AI Smartphone

The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 will most certainly bring the Galaxy AI, all wrapped up and settled into the Samsung Galaxy S24 series of devices. The S24 series should have three models—the base Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. Now with only rumors to guide us, it remains unclear just how much the Galaxy AI will be capable of and what shape this phone will take. In terms of processors, what we do know is that the new top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset will be built into the Samsung Galaxy S24. In certain regions, due to various limitations, the smartphones may come equipped with Samsung’s own Exynos 2400, which while not as celebrated as the Qualcomm processor, appears to be just as significantly boosted to support the AI revolution.

Another feature of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series to consider is that the company might finally let go of the curved screens in favor of the more convenient flat ones. While the curved glass added a certain charm to their devices, it did make it harder to maintain these phones and find replacements when damaged, so the move is likely a more economical one for Samsung users. The phone series set to launch at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 should have 2500 nits brightness, a 120Hz AMOLED display, and approximately the same sizes as its predecessors. The colorways should include Black, Gray, Violet and Yellow, with more unique options available on the Samsung website as per usual.

To look at, the models will likely be quite similar to their predecessors in terms of shape, camera layout, etc. The bezels might be thinner this time around and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra might get a titanium casing like the iPhone Pro. The well-loved Samsung cameras are set for a decent performance as well, the S24 and S24 Plus are likely to feature a 50 MP main camera, along with a 12MP ultra-wide, and a 10MP telephoto lens. The S24 Ultra could witness a 200 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide one, a 50MP telephoto one with 3x optical zoom, and a 10 MP periscope with 5x optical zoom instead of the rumored 10x. The AI enhancements on the zoom feature should provide some additional elements of clarity to the photography experience with the device. The rumors surrounding the Ultra camera are more varied than any other aspect of the phone. An IP68 resistance rating for water and dust should also be a feature of the smartphone but that’s not necessarily at the forefront of anyone’s mind, amidst all the other features.

What Else Do You Need to Know About the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event?

If the Samsung Galaxy S24 series has caught your eye and is a potential investment for you in 2024, then you might want to consider pre-reserving the Galaxy phone before you can pre-order it. Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S24 devices will begin following the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event on 17 January but if you go to the website now and register before the event, you could get the $50 Samsung Reserve credit that you can use on your pre-order on the Samsung website.

For other hardware releases you could hope to see, Android Authority states the Galaxy Fit 3 could make an appearance and a possible VR/AR headset should be introduced more officially as well. Not much is known about the other possible debutants but the Samsung Galaxy S24 series should give us more than enough to talk about.
