Wearable technology seems to be leading the way forward at the MWC 2024, and the Oppo Air Glass 3 is just another example of how you could be adorning yourself with tech right now. While we have many companies competitively chasing the goal of being a stand-alone device—with the Humane AI Pin leading that category—the Oppo smart glasses appear comfortable with optimizing the technology you’ve already got in your pocket. Designed to be used with a smartphone, the Oppo Air Glass 3 specs provide an interesting step forward for XR technology.
It doesn’t necessarily have the full range of features that a device like the Apple Vision Pro might provide. Instead, it settles for providing you with simple overlays in front of your eyes that can be brought up via voice commands rather than having to pull out your phone every time. There is no clear Oppo Air Glass 3 release date in sight just yet, but here is what we do know so far.
Presenting the Oppo Air Glass 3: Third Time’s the Charm?
To look at, the Oppo smart glasses are quite unassuming and simplistic—you could almost be convinced that these were just regular glasses built for those requiring a little visual assistance. They appear a little too wide on a user’s face so maybe that’s a giveaway, but the glasses seem to be simple enough otherwise, especially compared to the Oppo Air Glass 2 and its bulky design and gray color, which we’d seen during MWC 2023.
The device can be operated via a voice assistant or through the touch controls available on the arm of the glasses. For the device to be functional, it needs to be tethered to a smartphone but the catch here is that not just any smartphone will work. The Oppo Air Glass 3 is compatible with devices that run ColorOS 13 or later versions of the software. This means the glasses are only compatible with Oppo smartphones, with ColorOS being the company’s internally designed interface for its products.
That aside, the real game changer here is somehow not the Oppo smart glasses themselves, but the AI assistant that does all the work involved in operating the device.
Oppo MWC Presentation Also Showcases the Company’s AI—AndesGPT
The Oppo smart glasses function based on AndesGPT which is the company’s own large language AI model. The AI is currently only available in China so it isn’t one that we’ve seen and worked with in order to understand just how efficient it is. For all intents and purposes, the AI chatbot should be as capable of listening and responding to queries as ChatGPT and Copilot, which is to say that it should be able to respond in a more human way, if imperfectly.
This is quite an impressive move from Oppo and if the Oppo Air Glass 3 release date includes an international launch, then it is likely the AndesGPT AI will debut globally as well. Alternatively, we could see the Oppo smart glasses feature a Microsoft Copilot integration instead as the company recently announced that their smartphone users should be able to connect their phones to the AI chatbot, “reflecting OPPO’s commitment to exploring enhanced technological experiences in collaboration with partners across the industry,” according to the press note.
What Are the Oppo Air Glass 3 Specs?
We only have a prototype available so far so there is no way to guarantee that this will be what we see during an official release, but the Oppo Air Glass 3 specs are quite straightforward. The 50g glasses have a black frame and have a resin waveguide with a 1.70 refractive index which essentially describes how the light is guided to the users’ eye and how well they can see the virtual content through the glasses. The glasses also boast a 50 percent display brightness uniformity and peak eye brightness of 1,000 units, ensuring high visibility at all times when in use. With four microphones and reverse sound field technology, the Oppo Air Glass 3 promises a high-quality audio experience when you use the voice feature for your interaction with the device.
The temple of the glasses has a touch feature to awaken the glass and the AI voice assistant as a result, while the touch controls on the arm help control music playback, voice calls, navigation, and a host of other features. According to SoyaCincau, the prototype only has a 30-minute battery life which is entirely insufficient for it to be used in daily life, so that’s something the company will have to work on before release.
Oppo Air Glass 3 Release Date
Considering the company has only showcased a prototype for now, it seems the device isn’t in its final stage of production just yet. There will likely be a few more iterations of the device before it is fully formalized so there is currently no Oppo Air Glass 3 release date set yet, nor has the company given any indication of the pricing they have in mind for the release. After their history of launching multiple successful smartphones, the company is no stranger to bringing a new product to the market so we hope it won’t be long before we see the Oppo Air Glass 3 get a full-scale launch, updated AI and perhaps with a wider OS compatibility.
From what we can see of the Oppo smart glasses so far, it appears to be a useful device in general, with the potential to become a key player in the realm of XR glasses if it works on its battery. With how little we know about the internal AI capabilities, it is hard to say just how well the glasses will actually perform in the real world, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that it does well whenever it is released.
